Monica Hannaford was born in Surrey, England, and now lives in Southern Ireland. She has loved stories since childhood, listening to her mother and grandfather tell them when she was young. When she learned to read, she discovered the joy of books, and later, as a teacher in schools where storytelling was valued, she found she could visualize stories and create them as she went along. 

Many of the children she taught, now adults, tell her they still remember those stories and even share them with their own children.

This book developed a character of its own as she was writing it. The child in the story reflects Monica at five years old, living in the south of England, but the book itself is entirely fictional.
